Mamma Mia, What a Pizza!

I remember back when I used to pay $1 for a slice of pizza, and then that slowly crept up to $2 or $3 for some slices in the city.  Some pizza makers have said why stop there?  Why not create a 9 inch pizza that costs $1,000?  I mean surely someone will pay for it right?  Well a restaurant has created a pizza that will set you back 1k and someone actually did pay for it!  What’s so special about this pricey pizza?  For starters, it’s topped with six different kinds of Petrossian caviar, plus Maine lobster, crème fraiche and chives.  You can get one for yourself with 24 hours notice at Nino’s Bellissima Restaurant.  Bo Dietl was the first person to try the pizza and gave it a thumbs up for taste, but said the crust could have been a little crispier.

Not into caviar?  How about pizza with gold leaf?  SliceNY reports on a pizza from the New York Pizza Show that came topped with mesclun lettuce, tomato and yes, gold leaf.  The pizza gets a thumbs up for everything but the gold leaf, which Slice thinks was gimmicky and added no real flavor to the pizza. Check out the SliceNY photostream at Flickr.

Also at the New York Pizza Show was a pizza worth a whopping $3,700!  The pizza was sprinkled with gold and topped with champagne-soaked caviar and lobster marinated in the finest cognac.

Um…yeah.

I grew up in Queens (Whitestone) and to show my age, I remember when a slice was a quarter and we went crazy when they all raised it to $.35!!!!
