Smooshed Fruit

Fruit leather - some people cringe at the very mention of it, others, like myself are intrigued and always on the hunt for a good piece of fruit leather.  Fruit leather is very different from fruit rollups in that they are usually organic and do not contain any pectin or artificial flavors.  My favorite fruit leather, FruitaBü Smooshed Fruit, comes from the Stretch Island Fruit Company.  They have 5 different flavors which are all organic, lactose and gluten free, my favorite of which being the Apricot flavor.

There are plenty of other fruit leather brands out there, but many of them have a grainy texture or aren't completely organic.  Plus, I find it super hard to find pre-packaged goods that are gluten free.  You wouldn't believe what they put wheat/gluten in!  In fact, I think I'll have to devote an entire post to the hidden wheat in our world. Laughing

Fruit Leathers and Gluten-Free products

By JoeHoya image JoeHoya on March 9, 2007 at 09:09:03 AM

As a former Trader Joe's employee, I would definitely recommend you check them out for both fruit leathers and pre-packaged gluten-free products.  Here in DC, we carried (at least as recently as last November) seven different flavors of fruit leathers (Trader Joe's brand, of course).

TJ's also maintains a printed list of wheat- and gluten-free products in-store (ask an employee for a copy), and you can access it on their website, too:  http://www.traderjoes.com/Attachments/ec_gluten_2006.pdf

Not sure where in the city you're located, but I know the Washington Square store has been a huge hit for the company.

I will definitely try to go over to TJ's soon.  I usually just hit up Whole Foods for my gluten free products, but they don't always have a huge variety.  The TJ's at Union Square scares me!  It's always packed.  haha
