- the Reality of Foodie TV
-
With all of the summer Foodie Reality Televisions shows (The Next Food Network Star, Hell's Kitchen, and Top Chef: Miami) winding down/ending, a lot of buzz is going on around the web comparing the various shows and their relevance in a foodie world.I think many of the shows are like apples and oranges...what does Gordon Ramsay have in common with Tom Collichio? Not a lot. You have a firey chef with a mixed reputation (remember the theft?) and a restauranteur who claims to be a chef but is known far more for a frequently copied--and widely considered to be great-- concept than his culinary skills.
Over on the Food Network, this season had a scandal (don't they do background checks?) and you get a million plugs of the usual suspects (RR anyone?), but people are competing--ultimately--to be tv culinary personalities, which is far different than the Ramsay prize (this season, the culinary helm at his restaurant at the Green Valley Ranch) or the Top Chef honors ($100k for a restaurant, a car, and some other miscellaneous goodies).
So, it would seem that all of these shows have their place in the culinary landscape because they all serve different purposes. So as all of these seasons wind down and casting for the next one amps up, what do you think? Which show are you most drawn to, if any? Why? Do they all have a place in the tv lineup or have some expired? Is "Reality" tv in general just done?
