Too Busy to Cook?

A survey of 1,400 workers indicated long commutes and late office hours were the norm in today’s frantic society. Many of those questioned indicated they did not get home in time to cook an evening meal and 1 in 10 did not do a weekly grocery shopping and have condiments and beverages as their fridge staples. So what is up foodies? Are we only dining out these days? Has cooking at home lost its allure?

As a nation, we spent over 60 billion on eating out in 2005-2006!  A study by doctors in Winsconsin looked at the diet of 600 school children aged between 7-14 years. They found that one in 5 students who ate out 4 times a week at restaurants or fast food outlets were more likely to have higher blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels and metabolic changes that predispose to diabetes later in life, than those pupils who regularly ate at home. Besides the obvious fun in cooking at home, it seems as though the health concerns of dining healthy when dining out also warrants special attention when families (and foodies, and both) are planning their daily meals.

Sad, Sad truth

By aleeza image aleeza on August 30, 2007 at 03:09:34 PM

I think the truth is that often dining out can be more cost effective, especially if you are only cooking for one person...that coupled with the intrigue of trying so many awesome restaurants can provide for a lot of dining out.

I think that for families though having that time around the table is priceless and should always happen.

I also believe that if you are dining out you have a responsibility to support local restaurants and eat healthy!

There's eating out and then there's unhealthy eating out

When the issue is time...chances people are not cooking, are opting to eat out AND, most likely, they can't even take the time to sit down at a restaurant with wholesome menu options. And, no, Subway does not count as wholesome.

Home cooking

I am one of those with a long commute. I drive 75 miles in each direction for work. That is the price I decided to pay to live in the country and have a lot of land and animals. With that said, I still have time to cook each night. We set one night a week (usually Fridays) to go out and relax with dinner and drinks at a local place. When my kids were still at home, I insisted on family dinners. To me, cooking the nightly dinner is enjoyment, not a chore.

Tortured statistic

Don't get me wrong - I'm a big fan of cooking at home and I think it's sad how many families eat out on a regular basis for the sake of convenience.  But something in this blurb struck me as odd:

"They found that one in 5 students who ate out 4 times a week at restaurants or fast food outlets were more likely to have higher blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels and metabolic changes that predispose to diabetes later in life, than those pupils who regularly ate at home."

So only 20 percent of the students who ate out 4 times a week or more were more unhealthy than those who 'regularly ate at home?'

Is it just me, or does that mean that 80% of the kids who eat out 4 times a week or more are as healthy (or possibly healthier) than their counterparts?

And what, exactly, does "regularly ate at home" mean?  Is it not eating out at all?  Three times a week?  Twice?  Once?

Sounds like someone had to work real hard to find a way to make this stat seem important.
