New York Magazine has a new feature on kooky wine connoisseur Gary Vaynerchuk, who started webcasting his wine tastings in 2006. Vaynerchuk uses on-camera humor (he’s tasted dirt and rocks for a reference point) and a conversational, personable approach to wine to make the process appeal to even casual wine drinkers. “I’m not afraid to call a wine that tastes like Skittles or green peppers mixed with orange marmalade,” he says, “if you try to make out the black cherry, black currant, cassis, then you’re just tricking yourself—you are trying to impress people and use terminology that other people use.”
Vaynerchuk got his start after his father opened up a wine store in 1983 called Shoppers Discount Liquors, where he still manages the shop.
